When Norman Hector Allan McKinnon was born on 18 December 1888 in Kiama, New South Wales, his father, Hector, was 39 and his mother, Catherine, was 35.

Norman married Isabella Bruce Carter nee Thomson in 1920 in New Zealand in 1920. Isabella had four children from her previous marriage and Norman and Isabella had a daughter together, Health Flora McKinnon b. 12 Dec 1924.

He died on 9 January 1963 in Carterton, Wellington, at the age of 74 and 6 months later Isabella died in July 1963, aged 72.
