Ken met Maisie Pittendrigh whilst felling timber at Mallanganee and they were married in 1938 at Mallanganee. Maisie was the daughter of Alec Pittendrigh, who was born in South Africa and Catherine Gologoly. After the birth of their first two children they moved to Kingaroy, where Ken worked felling timber.
Around 1945, Ken and Maisie moved back to the Casino area, where Ken worked for Mr Cecil Bennett felling timber, and then back at the sawmill. During this time Ken was travelling home along the Railway Bridge at Casino, when the Sydney to Brisbane Express came hurtling through. With no time to get off the bridge, Ken lay down between the lines, and subsequently lost his big toe, between the sleeper and the railway track.
After this time, Ken joined the Railway Stores for 11 years. In 1955 Ken and Maisie left to go to Herberton, Nth Qld, where Ken worked with his son Paul cutting timber for twelve years, until 1967, around the Herberton and Yungaburra areas. In 1967, Ken travelled to Sydney, where he spent the last two years of his working life at Woolloomooloo, in the Defence Stores as a storeman. In 1969, Ken and Maisie purchased a house at Penrith after Ken’s retirement, and Ken later passed away in August 1973, aged 60. After Ken’s death, Maisie lived at Summer Hill for several years before passing away aged 64 in 1978. Ken and Maisie were to have a family of six daughters and one son.
