Walter, or Wally as he was known, and Ida were married at Boambee on the 23rd December 1933 by Charles Egerton, the local Anglican minister. Ida was the second child of Alexander Duffy and Eliza Amelia Stanton (Milly).
Wally was enlisted in the army as a private in 1943 and served at Newcastle, Bathurst and Sydney before being discharged due to being medically unfit for service. Upon being discharged Wally worked as a manager for Robard’s Farm in Mackays Rd Coffs Harbour until 1950.
In 1950 he started work as a general hand at the Ply Mill at Coffs Harbour Jetty, during this time Wally and his young family resided at a small house directly beside the bridge overlooking the train bridge at Coffs Jetty. Both Wally and Ida shared a passion for fishing and their son Stanley has many memories of sitting on the Coffs Jetty as a small child whilst his parents were fishing. Before long Coffs Harbour had a very wet season and the Ply Mill was closed because they couldn’t get the timber out.
During this time Wally worked as a contract chipper in the banana plantations around Shephard‟s Lane. In 1954 he joined the PMG Department in Coffs Harbour as a truck driver. Wally was to stay with the PMG until he retired in 1970 at the age of 63. Ida passed away in 1981, aged 70 in the Coffs Harbour Base Hospital after a battle with cancer. Wally passed away on the 19th of October in 1989 after suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and living at Coffs Harbour Nursing Home since July 1984. Both Wally and Ida are buried together at the Historical Cemetery at Coffs Harbour.
